The Thirteenth Running of the Race Around Briggs Regretfully
…. THIS RACE has been cancelled for Spring of 2010 Watch this space for news of any future runnings of the Race Around Briggs. I have moved to North Carolina and had
previously indicated that this would be my last round as race director.
However, the geographic distance and lack of a proper home base have made
logistics such that I have cancelled this year’s event. I regret this, but I
have to sign off as Race Director and thank all of you for 12 good years. But, take note, there are a few other
runners who are interested in holding this race, so there is chance of future
runnings of this beautiful and challenging course. Stay tuned. I am leaving the website up and may even
get back to writing about running as in the days of Milanrunning.com. There
is lots of running and lots of hills here in Western North Carolina. Get to running. Van |

This race features some hills in the rural setting of Dutchess County,
in a spot where going around the block is a 7.2 mile trip. The loop starts at
the high point of the course, dips midway down to the creek that is the low
point in elevation, and then climbs back up the hill to the starting point.
Most common comment from the past: “What a great course, what a
workout.”
Of course, there are two kinds of runners: those that do this course
once and say never again; and those who come back year after year.
And growing every year in excitement is the club trophy. This has
primarily been between the two local running clubs with Mid Hudson Road
Runners dominating over the years. But last year, Sullivan Striders joined
the fray fielding a club team. MHRRC once again dominated, showing
their strength and depth as a running club.
It is a pleasant and low key competition, but each team member knows
that if he/she only pass the person in front of them, they could win it for a
their team. It makes those middle of the pack runners very important.
There were just over 136 runners last year.
Hope you all can make it. Enjoy
the pictures in this website, and print out the entry form and send it in. Thanks. Van, Forrmer Race Director Feb 2010 |

Here
is a little story about Mike Slinskey: as he was coming up the final hill in
the 2008 race, a local resident was
out walking and going down the hill. She commented to me, later, on
how smooth and effortless Mike was running. Graceful might have been the word
she used. As she proceeded down the hill, the second and third place runners
and others came up the hill. She noted the contrast, as these folks all
seemed to be working very hard and climbing that hill, but showing it in
their bodies and faces. 2010 update: mike’s gracefulness was so noteworthy that
the passerby in question told me this
story a second time, well over a year later. |
